I remember in December, when we drove home after dark, looking for the
single electric candle in each window of our house. I remember lying in the living room in the
dark, watching the lights on the Christmas tree project needle shadows onto the
wall. I remember giggling over
gingerbread houses with my sisters. I
remember trying very hard to keep my brother and sisters from guessing the
gift I was giving them, and maybe crying when they figured it out. I remember setting up the wooden nativity that
my Grandpa Horch made. I remember
rolling out dough for ronza on Christmas Eve.
I remember making music with friends in our warm living room. I remember running hard back to the car after
leaving a gift on a doorstep, and laughing about the narrow escapes. I remember bringing canoe oars in from the garage
for the shepherds, and passing the bible as we read from Luke. I remember sharing a bed with my sister Diana
one Christmas Eve at Grandma and Grandpa Bodily’s house in Logan
and talking about infinity because we couldn’t sleep.
